Entourage Effect

Entourage Effect: What is it and How it Works?

This term describes the synergistic manner in which cannabinoids and terpenes work together. As a result, they create healing magic. The hemp plant has more than 80 cannabinoids and 100 terpenes. When they work together, they create an amazing healing effect.

Note that the entourage effect combines the ability of these various compounds. It helps to minimize the psychoactive effects of the cannabis plant caused by THC.  When the stand-alone components of cannabis are used for healing, they aren’t nearly as effective as when combined. The entourage effect simply means that teamwork is better than the sum benefit of individual hemp compounds.

The entourage effect is important for understanding how cannabis works inside your body and brain. There are almost 500 components found in the cannabis plant. However, less than 15% of them are “cannabinoids” such as CBD and THC. Depending on the cannabis strain, the ratio of CBD to THC normally varies. For instance, Sativa plants have more THC and less CBD. The converse is true for Indica plants.

Each cannabinoid possesses different healing effects. So, the ratio of CBD to THC entourage effect determines how the plant affects the human body. Apart from cannabinoids, other ingredients such as amino acids, terpenes, hydrocarbons, flavonoids, and other constituents. They all work to provide the consumer with a therapeutic effect.

Evidence of the Entourage Effect

There are plenty of consumers with personal experiences of the entourage effect. Besides that, research studies also confirm that it’s a real thing. All these forms of evidence suggest that weed works better when it’s used as a full spectrum. This means that it contains other compounds such as THC, terpenes, etc.

A study conducted in 1981 produced the first evidence of the entourage effect. It expressed that the whole plant extracts from the cannabis plant produced 330% more activity compared to THC on its own. Scientists conducting this study released a hypothesis showing that the cannabis plant may have “inhibitor” and “synergist” compounds. Well, this makes sense when considering many of the anecdotal accounts.

A study conducted in 1976 also claimed that CBD and THC work better together. The study established that when these compounds were used alone, consumers ended up taking larger doses. But when used together, the consumer experienced greater benefits with smaller doses. This simply supports the effectiveness of this effect. But it’s now clear that other active compounds in marijuana plants also play a role in causing this effect. They include aromatic terpenes such as myrcene, linalool, and pinene. Besides that, flavonoids and other phytocannabinoids like CBC, CBG, and THCA are crucial.

Note that research conducted in 2011 showed that most patients preferred all-natural medical marijuana. Reports collected indicate that a marijuana-based medication had little effect on health. All these are solid clinical evidence that suggests that the entourage effect is real.

Entourage Effect

Chemical Compounds That Create the Entourage Effect

There are numerous chemical compounds in the marijuana plant that create the entourage effect. First, there is a group of cannabinoids. One of the high-profile cannabinoids is CBD. Note that the hemp plant has more than 100 different cannabinoids. So, others include CBD, which eases pain and CBN, which regulates appetite. There is also tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive compound.

Apart from that, terpenes are another group of chemicals found in cannabis. They are oily molecules that give the plant its aroma. For example, limonene is a terpene that creates the citrus aroma. There are many different terpenes with a wide variety of aromas. They include pine, floral, and mint. Understand that these aromas often help distinguish different strains of hemp.

Why is the Entourage Effect Useful?

CBD is proving to be beneficial for promoting wellbeing. It interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to help maintain homeostasis. Additionally, it also provides the body with an added boost. So, it appears to have great potential when it comes to improving the user’s health.

But why is the entourage effect useful? Well, for this effect to be experienced, numerous marijuana compounds need to work together. However, all of them have different properties. So, it perfectly creates healing magic. This simply means that the user can treat numerous diseases at once. These effects offer patients a chance to treat a wide range of symptoms and conditions.

Final Thoughts

The entourage effect is achieved by using a small dose of the “whole-plant medicine”. Using CBD or terpenes independently means that you will end up consuming larger doses of either compound. But with the availability of terpenes and CBD, the body’s receptors will end responding very quickly. Note that “whole-plant medicine” also has an amazing scent and flavor. In short, it is a lot better to use a broad-spectrum extract rather than single cannabis compounds.
